As a full time repertory company, ENO is able to offer unique operatic resources to selected Young Singers for a duration of 2 years, with a third year sometimes being offered in individual cases. The company provides training in every aspect of the opera profession, whilst giving the singers the opportunity to perform in the largest proscenium theatre in the country. Training includes; extensive vocal, dramatic, movement and language coaching, as well as opportunities to learn from celebrated artists including; Joan Rodgers, Fiona Shaw, Gerald Finley, Thomas Hampson, Anthony Michaels-Moore and Malcolm Martineau. ENO's Young Singers Programme is particularly distinctive because of its commitment in enabling young singers to perform small and medium sized roles on the main house stage, whilst also benefiting from understudying the major roles that they will one day sing in their own right. The Selection Process There is no formal audition process for the YSP. The number of new singers each year is dependent on the repertoire that we are able to offer in the coming season, as well as the number of singers that we already have in their second year. YSP recruitment happens via a 'scouting system' involving the ENO casting department, music staff and YSP personnel, as we believe that the best way to recognise talent and potential is to identify it first hand. Singers of interest are firstly invited to work with our Head of Training (Phillip Thomas), followed by a stage audition to determine the singer's ability to perform within our large auditorium. We have 5 singers (varying in vocal range) on the programme this season: Mairead Buick, Madeline Shaw, Dwayne Jones, William Berger and James Gower. Unfortunately we cannot consider potential candidates unless they possess full British residency.
