Latest news from English National Opera
February 2010
We are delighted to announce that our sell-out production of Peter Grimes, won the recent South Bank Show Award for Opera. This award is a tribute to David Alden's visionary direction, the superb conducting of our Music Director, Edward Gardner, and spellbinding performances by the cast and ENO's orchestra and chorus. This is the third year running that ENO has won this award.
On Stage
David Alden, who directed Peter Grimes and our award-winning production of Janacek's Jenufa is back with his critically-acclaimed production of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. With Anna Christy and Barry Banks in the lead roles it is conducted by Antony Walker, is described by the Daily Telegraph as "a magnificent conception, which Alden stages with total command and it comes up blazingly fresh in this unmissable revival….ENO at its very best".
Another Donizetti opera, The Elixir of Love, has also been well received. Our new production of this comic romance is set in 1950s mid-town America and directed by Jonathan Miller with set and costume designs by Isabella Bywater. Sparring off each other are fast rising lyric tenor John Tessier (Nemorino) who made a sensational debut in The Barber of Seville in 2008, Sarah Tynan (Adina), one of ENO's previous Young Singers and Andrew Shore (Dulcamara), with his superb comic timing.
ENO Internationally
ENO's work continues to be seen internationally. Our production of Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre opens at the Adelaide Festival on 26 February.
ENO on your iPhone
You may have noticed that our Play Ligeti app, which we created around Le Grand Macabre as a fun and free way to explore and play the surreal score, was voted in the top five apps of 2008 by the Observer. Meanwhile downloads of our free Opera Guide app have taken off since iTunes took a fancy to it and put it in their 'new and noteworthy' section. Super functional, it allows you to find out what's on at ENO, watch film and interviews related to our productions and book a ticket all on the go.
From March, our work in new media and learning will be led by Roland Taylor, currently at BBC Radio 3, who we have appointed Director of New Media and Learning.
