Sir Vernon Ellis, President
Sir Vernon Ellis was Chairman of ENO from 2006 to 2012. He has long had a passion for the arts, particularly music, and through his Foundation, hosts regular musical events at his London home to support musicians. Sir Vernon is a Trustee ofseveral musical organisations and in March 2010 wasappointed Chair of the British Council. He is also Chairman of Martin Randall Travel and a classical music downloads venture in the US.
The backbone of his previous working life was at Accenture where until 2008 he was International Chairman.
Sir Vernon was awarded a Knighthood in the New Year Honours, 2011 for services to music.

Martyn Rose (appointed 1 May 2013), Chairman
Martyn was called to the Bar in his early 20s, but subsequently decided to pursue a career in business. He acquired his first company at the age of 29 and over the next three decades he created, built and developed a wide range of businesses from manufacturing to software, financial services and property.
In the 1990s he co-founded and chaired a start-up soft drinks business, which became one of the leading manufacturers within this sector, as well as co-founding and chairing a portfolio of commercial radio stations. Since becoming more focused on his charitable and philanthropic work, he has reduced the range of his commercial activities, and the remaining businesses with which he is involved are all companies that he established and continues to chair.
Since 2000, he has been trustee of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a school governor and co-chaired the National Citizen Service. He currently chairs the Big Society Network and DanceEast, a performing arts complex based in Ipswich, with which he has had a long term association.
Glyn Barker(appointed 21 January 2009), Deputy Chairman
Glyn Barker is Chairman designate of Irwin Mitchell Holdings Ltd and a non executive Director of Berkeley Group plc and Aviva plc.
He was Vice Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers from 2008 to 2011 and prior to that was on the Management Board, as Managing Partner responsible for Clients & Markets from 2006 to 2008. Between 2002 and 2006 he was head of PricewaterhouseCoopers Assurance practice after having established and ran PricewaterhouseCoopers Transactions Services business.
Ffion Hague (appointed 23 September 2009), Deputy Chairman
Ffion Hague spent six years in the Civil Service Fast Stream and began conducting board appraisals when working on evaluating the performance of NDPBs and Next Step Agencies. Since leaving the public sector in 1997 she has worked as a director of Arts & Business, a national business charity, and has sat on many major non-profit boards including The British Council, Action on Addiction, The Voices Foundation, the London Symphony Orchestra Advisory Board and she is a former trustee of the Outward Bound Trust.
In 2000 Ffion became a headhunter, working at board level across all sectors and specialising in non-executive appointments. Between 2003 and 2008 she was a director and shareholder at Hanson Green, a top-level non-executive search company, where she built up the board evaluation practice alongside her search activities. Since 2008, Ffion has focused exclusively on board evaluation in the UK corporate market, running her own practice, Independent Board Evaluation.
In 2008 Ffion published her first major book, “The Pain and the Privilege”, a biography of the women in David Lloyd George’s life which has given rise to many broadcasting projects, including the BAFTA Wales-winning documentary “The Two Wives of Lloyd George” (2009). In 2010, Ffion was elected an Honorary Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford.
Nicholas Allan (appointed 8 January 2008)
Nicholas Allan was Managing Partner of Boyer Allan Investment Management LLP, a specialist Asian fund management company. He is also a trustee of Families for Children, a West Country adoption agency, and of Sir Ernest Cassel Educational Trust.
Prior to setting up Boyer Allan Investment Management in 1998, Nicholas had senior roles with Kleinwort Benson, in London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Dr Harry Brünjes (appointed22 September2010)
Dr Harry Brünjes initially graduated from London University and then qualified in medicine at Guy’s Hospital. The Premier Medical Group developed from his Harley Street practice. There was an initial period of organic growth, followed by an acquisition strategy which culminated in a trade sale to Capita in 2010, with Harry remaining as Chairman of PMG. He is also Group Medical Director of Capita, non-Executive Director of The Good Care Group and Chairman of Woodsta Investments.
Harry is Chairman of Lancing College, Vice-President of the College of Medicine and a Board member of the Expert Witness Institute, Valderrama Golf Club and the English National Opera. Outside of medicine, Harry enjoys all sport, is a former professional pianist and has a lifelong interest in music and theatre. He is a regular writer, broadcaster and lecturer. Harry is married to the choreographer/director Jacqueline Storey and they have four children.
David Buchler (appointed 25 October 2006)
With a career spanning 30 years, David is recognised as a leading practitioner in the field of corporate turnaround and restructuring. A former Arthur Andersen partner and founding partner of Buchler Phillips, he was Chairman of Kroll, Inc. for Europe, Middle East and Africa until 2003. His appointments have included cases on behalf of major banks, lawyers, accountants, the Courts and the Department of Trade and Industry. He is currently Chairman/Vice Chairman/Director of a number of public and private companies in the United Kingdom including DB Consultants Ltd, Templewood Partnership, Volvere, Ventura UK, Augur Buchler Partners & London Asia Capital.
He is a Member of the Academy of Experts, a Member of Institute for Turnaround and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He is also Trustee of Syracuse University and was a producer of the London International Opera Festival from 1985-1993.
David Harrel (appointed 16 November 2006)
David Harrel was one of the founding partners of the law firm, SJ Berwin LLP in 1982 and was Senior Partner from 1992 to 2006. David holds a number of appointments: he is a non-executive director of Rathbone Brothers Plc and Proven (UK) Limited; chairman of CPA Global Limited, Savile Group plc and Landor Productions Limited; Consultant to SJ Berwin LLP; Blackwood Group and CPA Global Legal Support Services UK Limited; he is a trustee of The Clore Duffield Foundation.
He is a trustee of The Clore Duffield Foundation and the Aspinall Foundation and a Director of The Clore Leadership Programme.
Max Hole (appointed 19 September 2012)
Max Hole is Chief Operating Officer of Universal Music Group International (UGMI), part of the Universal Music Group (UMG). He is responsible for the operations of UMGI’s territories and regions worldwide, and for the central functions at its headquarters in London and leads UMG’s worldwide classical music business, including the iconic Deutsche Grammophon and Decca Classics labels.
Max joined UMGI as Senior Vice President, Marketing and A&R, in 1998, advanced to Executive Vice President in 2004, and subsequently added responsibility for Digital, Strategic Marketing and Commercial Affairs, and for Asia Pacific and Nordic/Central/Eastern Europe. He was appointed COO in 2010.
He began his music industry career as an independent artist manager and record producer. In 1982 he joined Warner Music UK as A&R Manager, progressing to Managing Director of WEA Records and in 1990 became founding Managing Director of East West Records.
Anthony Lilley (appointed 17 October 2007)
Anthony Lilley OBE is Chief Creative Officer and CEO of Magic Lantern. He is also Acting CEO of schools social networking company IMJack plc.
He is a BAFTA, Royal Television Society and Peabody Award winning interactive media producer. Through Magic Lantern, Anthony is also currently Creative Director of the Plymouth 2018, the successful World Cup Host City Bid.
He works extensively in media policy, currently as a Member of the Content Board of Ofcom as well as having advised government departments including DCMS and DCSF. In 2008, he was News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media at the University of Oxford and has recently taken up a Visiting Professorship at Bournemouth University. He advises Arts Council England and is Chair of Lighthouse in Brighton.
Catherine May (appointed 22 June 2011)
Catherine May is Corporate Affairs Director at SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers and the largest drinks company listed in the UK. Catherine has over twenty-five years of experience in communications, investor relations, marketing and corporate leadership. Before joining SABMiller she served on the executive committee of Centrica plc, the integrated energy group which encompasses British Gas, Centrica Energy and Direct Energy, as Group Director, Corporate Affairs. Before joining Centrica, Catherine was Group Director of Corporate Relations for Reed Elsevier plc, the international media and information services company.
She is also a non-executive trustee of the National Funding Scheme, a start-up charity which raises funds for arts and cultural institutions, and is also a business advisor to the charity Afrikids, which manages a range of community projects in northern Ghana.
Anthony Whitworth Jones (appointed 19 September 2012)
Anthony Whitworth-Jones is General Director of Garsington Opera, a position he has held since 2005. Prior to which he was Artistic Director at the Casa da Musica Porto, Portugal at the time of the opening of the acclaimed new building, designed by Rem Koolhaas. Anthony was General Director at Dallas Opera House as the planning for the building of a state-of-the-art opera house was taking shape and chief executive at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, responsible, with the Music Director and Director of Productions, for all artistic policy. It was under his watch that Glyndebourne moved from its original theatre to its new prestigious theatre.
He is a Trustee of the Leonard Ingrams Foundation, board member of the Young Classical Artist Trust, and Chairman of the Michael Tippett Musical Foundation.

John Cooke
John Cooke is an international economic relations consultant, and is Chairman of a City of London group focusing on financial services liberalisation. He is also Deputy Chairman of SITPRO, a trade facilitation agency. John was previously Head of International Relations at the Association of British Insurers and, before that, a senior civil servant at the Department of Trade & Industry. He regularly contributes to conferences, seminars and publications on international trade policy and financial services regulatory issues.
John is also Chairman of the ENO Benevolent Fund, a registered charity which makes grants to past or present members of the company in cases of special need or hardship.
