A brand new production of Monterverdi’s masterpiece, which sees one of the world's oldest musical dramas in the intimate setting of Bristol Old Vic – the UK's oldest continuously working theatre. A showcase for young British talent, members of ENO’s Harewood Artists scheme will sing the principal roles, led by up-and-coming conductor Christopher Bucknall.
A lavish wedding banquet turns to dust in the mouths of the guests, as the ravishing Eurydice dies amidst the celebration, and her bereaved husband vows to dig her soul out of hell. To get there, he has to charm the damned – and fortunately he is blessed with a voice that can make torturer and tortured alike forget who they are. The king of hell himself is moved to grant the balladeer's wish, but with a fatal condition: he must not look back at his wife on the way out.
You will be the guests. Everything else is a journey to hell and back.
Based on the Greek tragedy, this haunting new staging reunites director Tom Morris (The Death of Klinghoffer, War Horse) and designer Tom Pye (Thebans, Death in Venice).
Orfeo is sung in English. Performed at Bristol Old Vic.
