In recent seasons ENO has produced three critically acclaimed Janáček productions; this current cycle of Janáček operas representing an important part of the Company's work over the past four years. This is the first revival of Christopher Alden's acclaimed production of The Makropulous Case. It is conducted by one of the great Janáček conductors of the last 30 years, Sir Richard Armstrong, who leads an outstanding cast including Amanda Roocroft singing the role of Emilia Marty for the first time and Andrew Shore as Dr Kolenatý.

ENO opens and closes the 2010/11 Season with co-productions with the Metropolitan Opera, New york, continuing the ongoing artistic partnership which begun in 2005. Gounod's grand opera based on the classic Faust story is directed by Des McAnuff, the Tony Award winner for Jersey Boys and The Who's Tommy. This large-scale company work is conducted by the ENO Music Diretor Edwrad Gardner, with a cast led by Toby Spence singing the title role for the first time.
Ian McMillan becomes ENO's first Poet in Residence

ENO has launched a new programme of learning and participation initiatives aimed at widening audiences for opera and developing engagement. The programme includes the appointment of Ian McMillan as ENO's first Poet in Residence, creche facilities to allow parents of young children to attend the opera and Opera Preview nights for anyone wishing to sample the upcoming season.
Katie Mitchell directs a new production of Idomeneo for ENO

ENO presents a new production of Mozart’s first mature and rarely staged masterpiece, Idomeneo, for the first time since 1962. Directed by the award-winning Katie Mitchell she brings her intensity of emotion and distinct style to one of Mozart’s most deeply felt pieces. ENO’s Music Director Edward Gardner conducts the virtuosic yet often intimately lyrical score with an exciting cast of some of Britain’s best operatic talent led by Paul Nilon.
Penny Woolcock directs a new production of Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers

Penny Woolcock returns to ENO to direct her second opera for the Company following the success of her debut, John Adams’s Doctor Atomic, a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera. Rising star Rory Macdonald conducts Bizet’s exciting and dramatic score after his success last season with The Barber of Seville. An excellent cast is led by one of Britain’s best loved tenors Alfie Boe.
