Date published: Wed 02 Nov 2011

E N O presents the London premiere of Damon Albarn’s Dr Dee, first staged July 2011 at Manchester International Festival. This visionary new work which The Observer called “A thoroughly beguiling spectacle, suffused with a gloriously rich tonal score” and Opera magazine dubbed an “undeniably heartfelt hymn to Albion, celebrating the cultural richness of these isles from Gloriana to Cool Britanniaruns for eight performances from 25 June, 2012 as part of the London 2012 Festival.

Dr Dee recounts the fall from grace of one of the most charismatic figures of the Elizabethan age, charting his journey from influential courtier, polymath mathematician, astrologer and spy to his death in poverty, disgrace and isolation.

Part meditation on the idea of Englishness, part lament for a lost spirituality, Dr Dee takes the form of a vibrant and physically energetic modern Elizabethan masque suffused with intriguing projections. It features an alchemical mix of classical and modern vocals, including performance from Damon Albarn, accompanied by an eclectic ensemble of instruments.

In a series of visually stunning tableaux spanning five centuries of English history and the three realms of earth, heaven and hell, Dr Dee is directed by the multiaward- winning Rufus Norris with his usual virtuosic flare.

Wednesday 2 November sees the broadcast of an exclusive interview with Damon Albarn and excerpts from a recent performance of Dr. Dee on Steve Lamacq's BBC 6 Music show at 18:00 as part of the Salford Season.

An album entitled Damon Albarn's Dr Dee is due for release next Spring.

DR DEE opens at the London Coliseum on 25 June 2012, for 8 performances – 25, 26, 28, 29 June & 4, 6, 7 July at 7.30pm and 7 July at 2.30pm
