Martyn Rose appointed Chairman of English National Opera

Martyn Rose, one of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs and business figures, has today been appointed as the chairman of English National Opera, a role he will take up on 1 May 2013.

Following ENO’s critically-acclaimed production of Parsifal in 2011, director Jonathan Kent and ENO’s Music Director Edward Gardner work together on their first Wagner opera, The Flying Dutchman.

 

One of Wagner’s earliest operas to feature the theme of redemption through death, ENO’s new production of The Flying Dutchman builds on the critical success of 2011’s Parsifal – “a staging that is as good as any Wagner seen in London in the last 20 years” (The Guardian) – highlighting ENO’s commitment to produce highly theatrical world-class opera. ENO’s production of The Flying Dutchman is the first Wagner opera for both director Jonathan Kent and conductor, ENO’s Music Director, Edward Gardner.

Barrie Kosky makes his Company debut with ENO’s first ever Rameau opera, Castor & Pollux

In a landmark staging, ENO presents its first Rameau directed by leading opera and theatre director Barrie Kosky. Baroque specialist Christian Curnyn conducts, leading a strong cast featuring Allan Clayton and Sophie Bevan, both of whom are members of this year’s ENO Young Singers Programme, as Castor and Telaïre.

Brothers Castor and Pollux are both in love with Telaïre, who loves only Castor. Pollux is immortal and Castor is not. The effects of this complexity are only intensified by Phoebe, Telaïre’s sister, declaring love for Pollux, which is unrequited. The battles and anguish of unending love, jealousy and fraternal duty are played out through the ages-old story, until the four meet their fates.
