A sumptuous new production of Verdi’s tragic masterpiece Rigoletto opens at ENO on Thursday (13 Feb), directed by Olivier award-winner Christopher Alden. Located within a 19th century gentleman’s club, the setting is rich with exquisite period detail and atmosphere, providing the perfect backdrop for Verdi’s themes of passion, revenge and sacrifice.
Rigoletto is widely considered to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi’s middle-to-late career, so we are delighted to welcome a stellar cast to perform the lead roles with Hawaiian baritone Quinn Kelsey making a return to the UK stage in the title role of the jester Rigoletto; soprano Anna Christy making her debut in the role of Gilda, and British bel canto tenor, Barry Banks, a regular performer at the London Coliseum, also making his debut in the role of the Duke of Mantua. Music Director Emeritus of Dallas Opera Graeme Jenkins makes a welcome return to ENO to conduct.
