LIKE LOOKING IN A MIRROR
Since winning an Olivier Award for her 2006 performance as Janáček’s Jenůfa, Amanda Roocroft has returned to ENO to sing Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes and the 337-year-old diva in The Makropulos Case. Her appearance in Der Rosenkavalier carries a particular resonance. This was the opera in which, as a 24-year old soprano, she made her 1990 stage debut with Welsh National Opera as the young Sophie. Now, like many leading sopranos before her, she has progressed to the more mature, richer role of the Marschallin, who, in one of the opera’s most poignant moments, sees in Sophie a mirror-image of her own younger self.
‘Her Elina Makropulos is an even greater achievement than her Jenůfa and Katya, because she morphs here into a totally different stage personality, temperamentally, vocally and physically, from the Roocroft we have known – and from any other Makropulos I have seen.’
