La traviata

Verdi
New Production

'Spinning diamantine coloratura, Corinne Winters' hypnotic Violetta leads an excellent ENO cast.'
★★★★★ The Sunday Telegraph

#ENOtraviata

La traviata tells the famous story of how beautiful but fragile courtesan Violetta is coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover’s reputation.

A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, it combines compelling characters with hugely powerful, moving and instantly recognisable melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time.

It was always Verdi’s desire for La traviata to be conveyed in a modern setting. This new production of his masterpiece by acclaimed theatre director Peter Konwitschny gets to the very heart of the opera’s themes of passionate love and tragic death with a modern and uncluttered staging, and a running time of under two hours.

“The themes of love and death are, of course, timeless, and so we deliberately avoided realistic sets and instead created a symbolic world of theatre drapes that is both surreal and nightmare-like. When the curtain rises in the theatre, a story begins. When it falls, that story is over.”
Excerpt from an interview with Peter Konwitschny – see the full interview in the La traviata programme

Starring exciting, young American soprano Corinne Winters in her European debut; rising, young British lyric tenor Ben Johnson and internationally-acclaimed baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore.
