How Gift Aid works

The Gift Aid scheme is for gifts of money by UK taxpayers. Gift Aid allows ENO to take your donation and reclaim basic rate tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) .

For current donations this means ENO is able to claim an additional £2.80 for every £10 you give. 

If you are a higher rate taxpayer you will also benefit by claiming relief on the difference between the basic rate and higher rate of tax on your tax return.

Gifts of Quoted Shares and Securities
The latest changes to the rules on donating shares to charities offer donors an unprecedented opportunity to minimise their tax bill while maximising their donation to ENO.

For example: if you donate quoted shares worth £10,000, you can deduct this amount from your income for the tax year in which the gift is given, plus any costs of transferring the shares.

Payroll Giving
Payroll Giving allows you to make donations to charity directly from your monthly pay or company/personal pension. The donations are made after your National Insurance contributions but before Income Tax meaning you get tax relief on your donation immediately at your highest rate of tax.

Companies can also encourage their employees to support the charitable sector by making donations direct from the payroll. This offers companies an opportunity to be associated with a charity while reflecting the company's own core values.

If you're a sole trader, or a partnership, payments you make to ENO may qualify as donations under the Gift Aid scheme. They're personal donations so you won't be able to set them against your profits for tax purposes. But ENO will be able to claim back the equivalent amount of the tax on the donation at the basic rate.
