Catherine Malfitano’s critically acclaimed production of Tosca returns to ENO

Opens Monday 3 October at 7.30pm at London Coliseum (13 performances)

Soprano Catherine Malfitano’s acclaimed production of Puccini’s tense drama returns to ENO for its second revival. Set in Rome at the time of Napoleon’s invasion, this classically inspired and visually stunning reimagining of Tosca was described as ‘an intelligent and forceful interpretation’ (Daily Telegraph).

Tosca is a turbulent story of love, lust murder and political intrigue. Its dramatic story line and Puccini’s richly romantic score make it one of the world’s best loved operas.

Director Catherine Malfitano was one of the leading Tosca’s of her generation and has performed at all the world’s leading opera houses. The creative team comprises designer Frank Philip Schlössmann, costume designer Gideon Davey and lighting designer David Martin Jacques. Italian verismo specialist Oleg Caetani returns to ENO to conduct.

Rising American soprano Keri Alkema makes her ENO debut in the title role. She has performed with Opéra National de Bordeaux, Opera North, Glyndebourne on tour and at numerous opera houses across the United States.

Acclaimed Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones reprises his role as Cavaradossi. Gwyn was last seen at ENO as Don Alvaro in Calixto Bieito’s award winning production of The Force of Destiny. The Financial Times commented that ‘his strong and tireless tenor has never sounded better’.

Craig Colclough makes his role debut as Scarpia. His previous performances with ENO include Kurwenal in Daniel Kramer’s production of Tristan and Isolde and as the Sheriff Jack Rance in Richard Jones’s Oliver Award-winning production of The Girl of the Golden West.

New ENO Harewood Artist Andri Björn Róbertsson makes his Company debut as Angelotti. After completing a postgraduate course and opera course at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he joined the National Opera Studio as a trainee in September 2013. He was a member of the International Opera Studio in Zürich, Switzerland for the 2014/15 season and was named a 2014 HSBC Academy Laureate of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. He has performed with Garsington Opera, Bath International Festival and in the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House.

British baritone Adrian Powter is Sacristan. He last performed for ENO the role of Elviro in the revival of Nicholas Hytner’s production of Xerxes in September 2014.

Scott Davies and Graeme Danby return to reprise their roles as Spoletta and Sciarrone respectively.
