The great opera impresario and close friend of ENO Gerard Mortier died this weekend after an eight month period of illness.
Gerard was a celebrated figure in the arts, who attracted both controversy and applause during his long career. He was a trailblazer and rejuvenator at Salzburg, a provocateur in Paris and, more recently, in Madrid; a man of taste and fearless artistic vision.
He was also a great personal source of advice and support and I will miss him hugely. A regular visitor to ENO, his final collaboration with our company will appear in London next year providing a wonderfully appropriate way to celebrate his unique contribution to the world of performing arts.
