It's now just two weeks until our 2014/15 season opens with our much-anticipated production of Verdi's Otello. A thrilling story of deception, love and jealousy, this unmissable new staging stars the award-winning tenor Stuart Skelton (Peter Grimes, Fidelio) in the title role.
A dramatic tale of betrayed friendship, Verdi's Otello vividly conveys Shakespeare's tragedy through some of the composer's most powerful and emotive music. Set on the Cypriot coast, it sees the Moorish army general Otello and his new wife Desdemona destroyed by the manipulative Captain Iago.
Celebrating the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, Otello is directed by David Alden (Peter Grimes, Billy Budd), who reunites with his Grimes collaborators ENO music director Edward Gardner and tenor Stuart Skelton, recent winner of the International Opera Award for Best Male Singer, who sings Otello for the first time.
The cast also includes baritone Jonathan Summers as Iago, rising star soprano Leah Crocetto as Desdemona, ENO Harewood Artist Barnaby Rea as Lodovico, Pamela Helen Stephen as Emilia and Allan Clayton as Cassio.
