Blond Eckbert

ENO presents Blond Eckbert as part of the Studio Live season, based on Ludwig Tieck's novel. A fateful encounter in the forest reveals the terrifying truth of the outside world.

Blond Eckbert is a gripping tale of mystery and imagination.

Happy together in their forest cabin Eckbert and Berthe are content with their solitude. But when Eckbert asks his wife to tell a visiting friend the story of her childhood, he starts a chain of events that leads to the destruction of everything: his marriage, his friendship, his understanding of the world and eventually himself.

Based on Ludwig Tieck’s enigmatic supernatural short story Der blonde Eckbert published in 1797 the opera, written by Judith Weir, premiered at the London Coliseum in 1994.  This production is a shortened one-act version of the opera, first performed in 2006 by The Opera Group.

All performances are at Lilian Baylis House – enter via West Hampstead Mews, West Hampstead, London, NW6 3BB.

ENO Studio Live

ENO Studio Live is part of our investment in talent development.

We have created a series of performances that enable our Staff Directors to create and deliver their own fully staged productions within a studio environment. It also gives members of the ENO Chorus a chance to take on principal roles.
