ENO Studio Live: The Day After

Phaeton fancies himself a God, but his youthful impetuousness leads to disaster and tragedy.

Directed by Jamie Manton, a regular ENO Staff Director, and conducted by James Henshaw, ENO’s Chorus Master, The Day After tells the story of Phaeton, son of the Greek Sun God Phoebus. Challenging his father to let him drive the chariot of the Sun, Phaeton fancies himself a God, but his youthful impetuousness leads to disaster and tragedy. The production features designs by Camilla Clarke, winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize for Stage Design.

First performed by Holland Opera at Fort Rhijnauwen in the province of Utrecht, this is the UK premiere of a new choral version of The Day After with a libretto from April de Angelis. Originally commissioned by Opera Holland with assistance from the Eduard van Beinum Foundation.

Licensed by arrangement with Peters Edition, London.

ENO Studio Live
ENO Studio Live is part of our investment in talent development. We have created a series of performances that enable our Staff Directors to create and deliver their own fully staged productions within a studio environment. It also allows scope for members of the ENO Chorus to take on principal roles.

ENO Studio Live is staged in Studio 3, Lilian Baylis House, West Hampstead, NW6 3AX.

A drinks bar will be available every evening.

Our Rehearsal Studios in West Hampstead, behind the original façade of the West Hampstead Town Hall, were previously the Decca Recording Studios and hosted many classical recording sessions, alongside five albums by The Moody Blues, the formation of Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie’s first single Liza Jane.
