Matthew Best studied at King’s College, Cambridge, and at the National Opera Studio.

Career Highlights

Matthew enjoys an extensive concert career, and has made numerous recordings as singer and conductor.

He has worked with many of the world’s leading conductors, including Gergiev, Pappano, Nelsons, Salonen, Colin Davis, Andrew Davis, Gardiner, Marriner, Haitink, Elder, Hickox, Svetlanov and Sanderling.

Notable engagements elsewhere: Swallow (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, ROH, Oviedo); Heinrich Lohengrin (Royal Swedish Opera, WNO); Marke (WNO, Bilbao, Philharmonia, CBSO, Oper Leipzig); Jochanaan (WNO, LSO); Sprecher Die Zauberflöte (ROH); Peneios Daphne (Santa Fe, Oper Frankfurt); Tsargo Adriana Mater (Santa Fe); La Roche Capriccio (Grange Park). Earlier in his career he also sang Kurwenal (Scottish Opera, La Monnaie, Nancy); Don Pizarro Fidelio/Leonore (Proms, Salzburg, Amsterdam, New York, Scottish Opera, CBSO, Rotterdam Philharmonic); Wotan/Wanderer (Stuttgart, Lyon, Scottish Opera); Amfortas, Scarpia, King Vladislav Dalibor, Commendatore (Scottish Opera); Flying Dutchman (Rouen); Scarpia (Florida Grand Opera, WNO, Opera North, Scottish Opera); Vairochana in the premiere of Jonathan Harvey’s Wagner Dream (Amsterdam, Paris).
