Notable engagements elsewhere: baritone and buffo roles at La Scala, Milan; Liceu, Barcelona; Aix-en-Provence; Oper Köln; ROH Muscat; Paris Châtelet; Deutsche Oper am Rhein; WNO; Almeida Opera; Bregenzer Festspiele; Wiener Festwochen; Garsington; Grange Park and Holland Park. He has given numerous performances at Aldeburgh Festivals, including Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire and Busoni’s Arlecchino. He has sung the Gilbert and Sullivan ‘patter’ roles at the Savoy Theatre and throughout the world, including Bunthorne Patience (BBC Proms, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras) and he appeared in Mike Leigh’s Oscar-winning G&S film, Topsy-Turvy. He has written for stage, screen and opera house.

Writing credits include: a new play for Let’s Make an Opera! (Britten Estate commission), the television films A Salaried Wit and A Gooseberry Fool; he wrote and presented the critically acclaimed television series about Gilbert and Sullivan, A Motley Pair (Sky Arts). He wrote and directed I am the very model of a Modern Major-General for BBC Radio 4.

Directing credits include: Die Fledermaus, The Yeomen of the Guard and The Merry Widow (Philharmonia/RFH); HMS Pinafore (Barbican) and The Mikado (RFH).
