ENO to pilot new Youth Company as part of ENO Baylis programme

7th August 2017 in News

In 2017/18 our learning and participation programme, ENO Baylis, will pilot a new strand to its youth programme. 15 young people aged 14-19 have been selected to come together to form the ENO Youth Company, involving those with particular interest in performance, singing, music, directing, creative writing, and design/making.

The ENO Youth Company will offer a progression route for some of the young people that we have met through our secondary school and youth programmes, with a particular focus on those who might not otherwise have the means or support structures around them to develop their skills outside of school.

The ENO Youth Company will work together over a series of intensive workshops across the year, in half terms and school holidays, supporting the young people to develop their own creative voice and collaborate together to create new work.  Sessions will be led by a variety of  professional artists from the range of different disciplines that combine to make opera, exposing them to a range of creative practice. Built into the programme will be regular opportunities for the young people involved to share their work. The first workshop will take place in October, with participation from Composer Nico Muhly who will also be rehearsing the world premiere of his newest opera, Marnie.

Each member of the ENO Youth Company will be offered tailored support such as coachings with a member of the music staff, opportunities with the ENO design department, shadowing a conductor or director on main stage rehearsals, or learning from a member of the ENO orchestra or chorus to develop their understanding of the industry.

The project will culminate in intensive week long creative project in July. An installation of work will be displayed during the week to showcase what they have created during the year.
