Sad death of John McMurray, Senior Artistic Advisor to ENO

31st January 2020 in News

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the death of John McMurray, who passed away today.

John joined the company as Head of Casting in 2006. In 2015, following the departure of John Berry, he became Senior Artistic Advisor and remained in that position until he left in 2017, working on all productions during this period.

John was a much-loved member of the company during his time with ENO and admired by all who worked with him. His knowledge of the opera repertoire was second to none. He was a mentor to numerous singers, especially those in the early stages of their careers.

Our chairman, Harry Brunjes, said:

“On behalf of English National Opera we are all saddened to hear this tragic and indeed untimely news. John McMurray was a respected, knowledgeable and committed Casting Director at ENO over a period of many years. It must also be remembered that John was central to the life and development of the Harewood Artists programme which is part of his legacy.

John was a good man and it is disappointing that he did not have longer to enjoy his well-deserved retirement. The thoughts of all of us are with Amanda.”

John McMurray will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.
