Mezzo-soprano Madeleine Shaw is a former member of the Young Singer’s Programme at English National Opera and continues to enjoy great success on the opera and concert stages.

It was in the role of the Beggar Woman in Deborah Warner’s acclaimed production of Death in Venice that Madeleine made her debut at English National Opera; she went on to reprise this role at La Monnaie, Brussels, Dutch National Opera and La Scala, Milan.

Madeleine recently returned to the Glyndebourne Festival as Marcellina in a new production of Le nozze di Figaro conducted by Riccardo Minasi, and as Hippolyta in a revival of Peter Hall’s legendary production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; she also returned to English National Opera as La Badessa in Suor Angelica. She will create the role of Angela in the World Premiere of Jonathan Dove’s The Uprising in a co-production with the Royal Scottish National Opera, Saffron Hall and Glyndebourne, and will make her debut at the Opéra national du Rhin as Gertrude in a new production of Hänsel und Gretel.

Last season, she returned to English National Opera as the Mayor’s Wife in Jenůfa and as Rita in The Handmaid’s Tale, and to the Longborough Festival as Fricka in Das Ring des Nibelungen. She made her debut with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra as the Aufseherin in concert performances of Elektra, conducted by Edward Gardner and later released by Chandos.
