On Wednesday 7 October 2026, Dead Man Walking won The Critics’ Circle Achievement in Opera Award 2025.

English National Opera is delighted to celebrate this recognition for our acclaimed production of Jake Heggie and Terrence McNally’s powerful opera, directed by Annilese Miskimmon and conducted by Kerem Hasan.

Premiering at the London Coliseum in November 2025, Dead Man Walking was praised by critics and audiences alike for its gripping storytelling, emotional depth and outstanding performances. The production explored themes of justice and humanity with extraordinary sensitivity, reaffirming the enduring power of opera to engage with complex contemporary issues.

This award is a testament to the artistry, dedication and collaboration of everyone involved in bringing the production to the stage, including the cast, Chorus and Orchestra of ENO, creative team, and the many colleagues behind the scenes who made the production possible.

We extend our thanks to The Critics’ Circle and offer congratulations to all the artists and organisations recognised this year.

Dead Man Walking was produced by English National Opera in collaboration with Opera North and Finnish National Opera.
