La traviata
When the world worships wealth, love costs dearly.
La traviata is an opera that tells the story of the tragic love between the courtesan, Violetta, and the romantic, Alfredo Germont.
Violetta turns her back on a life of glamour, style and standing for the man she loves. But, upper-class fashionable society, feeling itself spurned, decides it’s not a suitable match. Alfredo and Violetta’s love threatens to shame his family. His father directly appeals to Violetta to relinquish her one chance of happiness. Violetta submits and her act of self-sacrifice leads to her paying the ultimate price.
Richard Farnes returns to the ENO to conduct Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece, which contrasts spectacular party scenes with tender, intimate moments – underpinned with classic opera songs you’re bound to recognise. Singing Violetta is outstanding soprano, Nicole Chevalier. She is joined by Jose Simerilla Romero as Alfredo and Roland Wood as Giorgio Germont, along with ENO Harewood Artists, Zwakele Tshabalala as Gastone and Amy Holyland as Flora.
