From the moment a production is programmed, ENO’s Music and Surtitles Library team begins months of meticulous work. They liaise with publishers to hire or purchase materials, then carefully prepare and annotate more than a hundred scores, reflecting each production’s interpretation and evolving staging – right up until opening night.

For the musicians of the ENO Orchestra to the singers in the ENO chorus and our principal roles, every detail matters. Cuts, page turns, bowings and stylistic markings must be precisely set so rehearsals and performances can run smoothly

From carefully marked scores for everyone involved in the production, from artists to lighting designers, to newly commissioned English translations for our singers, this work is precise, demanding and entirely unique to ENO.

It all happens quietly, behind the scenes – but without it, opera cannot happen.
