Born in South Wales, Gary James is a lighting designer who trained at RADA, and has been working in the industry for almost thirty years.
In that time he has worked on many landmark productions at ENO, WNO, the National Theatre and Wexford Opera Festival, among other national and international companies. He is the deputy head of lighting at Dubai opera house.
Re-lights of ENO productions include: David Alden’s Peter Grimes (Opera de Oviedo, ENO 2023), Simon McBurney’s A Dog’s Heart (La Scala, Milan; Opéra de Lyon; DNO, Amsterdam), Akhnaten (2019, 2023), Liceu Theatre Barcelona (2025).
Other work includes: Re-light of Simon McBurney’s A Rakes progress (Stanislavsky theatre Moscow).
