John is a director and opera singer, who is no stranger to ENO audiences.
As a director, his recent engagements include new productions of The Merry Widow, for which he has also written the script for a new translation, and Trial by Jury, both for Scottish Opera and Opera Holland Park, The Yeomen of the Guard and Ruddigore for OHP, The Magic Flute, Barber of Seville and Iolanthe for Charles Court Opera.
He is Artistic Director of Waterperry Opera Festival and CCO. He is a passionate advocate for new work and work for young people, having created or directed many projects for RBO, Opera North, Opera Holland Park and CBBC.
As a bass-baritone he has regularly performed a wide range of roles for, amongst others, English National Opera, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera Holland Park, Grange Festival, Garsington Opera, Nederlandse Reisopera and the BBC Proms, most recently singing Captain Corcoran HMS Pinafore and The Pirate King The Pirates of Penzance, both for ENO, Sir Despard Murgatroyd Ruddigore for Opera North, Duke / Judge / Hotel Manager Powder Her Face for Nederlandse Reisopera and Peter Quince in Garsington Opera’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the BBC Proms.
