Born in Birmingham, Anglo / Irish baritone Jolyon Loy read French and Italian at Magdalen College, Oxford, furthering his studies at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Royal Academy of Music, and, as a Glyndebourne New Generation Artist, at London’s National Opera Studio, Awarded an Extraordinary Prize at Tenor Viñas.
He is a Britten Pears Artist, Winner of the Bayreuth Scholarship at the Wagner Society Singing Competition and an alumnus of both the Internationale Opernwerkstatt – Festival der jungen Stimmen and Verbier Festival’s Atelier Lyrique.
His recordings include Apollo in John Eccle’s Semele with Academy of Ancient Music, available on AAM CD (nominated for a Gramophone Award) and Faust in Song on Champs-Hill Records. For English National Opera, he has sung Aye Akhnaten and Earl of Morton Mary, Queen of Scots, and engagements elsewhere have included Tarqinius The Rape of Lucretia and Schaunard La bohème for London’s Royal Opera, Zoroastro Orlando at Buxton International Festival, Leone Tamerlano for Cambridge Handel Opera Group, Aeneas Dido and Aeneas for Vache Baroque, Paolo Albiani Simon Boccanegra for Grange Park Opera, as well as Marullo Rigoletto for his debut at Tiroler Festspiele Erl. Upcoming engagements include the title role in Don Giovanni for Blackwater Valley Opera Festival.
