Explore the hidden world of ENO and discover the secrets of the largest theatre in London’s West End on one of our guided tours.
The London Coliseum opened as a variety theatre in 1904 and is a wonderful example of Frank Matcham’s unique Edwardian style. Planned by theatre impresario Oswald Stoll, he wanted it to be the “Peoples’ Palace of Pleasure” and the best equipped theatre in London. When building began it quickly caught the attention of the public who were bewitched by our iconic revolving globe.
On your visit you will get to see our beautifully preserved front-of-house areas and explore the warren of staircases and hallways backstage. Our friendly tour guides will share with you the history of the building and how it has adapted over time to its changing cast of characters and companies. Find out why the tram line on the Strand was so important to the theatre and just how we once had a cricket match on stage. Don’t forget to ask about we uncovered under the carpet too!
As we are a working theatre we cannot guarantee access to the auditorium and some areas are only accessible by stairs.
