The Magic Flute

An enchanted journey into the heart of love

19 Mar–30 Mar 2024

Simon McBurney’s five-star production of The Magic Flute returns to the ENO, promising an evening of magic, romance and timeless music.

Mozart’s classic follows the adventures of Prince Tamino and the bird-catcher Papageno on their quest to rescue Pamina. Their search becomes one for truth and reason, love and enlightenment. Nothing is quite what it seems in this surprising, fantastical journey.

To help them on their way, Tamino and Papageno are given musical instruments enhanced with magical powers. And these prove invaluable. The travellers have a series of trials and tribulations to conquer to find a deeper understanding of true love and happiness.

The cast includes Norman Reinhardt making his ENO debut as Tamino alongside David Stout as Papageno. They are joined by former ENO Harewood Artist Sarah Tynan as Pamina and the fiery coloratura of ENO debutante Rainelle Krause as the manipulative Queen of Night. The ENO Chorus and Orchestra are conducted for the first time by Erina Yashima.

A collaboration with Complicite. Co-production with Dutch National Opera and the International Festival of Lyric Art, Aix-en-Provence

The role of Sarastro is generously supported by Mark Tousey and the American Friends of ENO.

A blend of fantasy, comedy, and romance, The Magic Flute is an easy opera that’s perfect for newcomers. The fairy-tale-like storyline makes it simple to follow and is more engaging for those who are not familiar with typical opera formats. The combination of a variety of characters and a colourful and imaginative production, produces a relatable and enjoyable experience for newbies.

The production of The Magic Flute at the ENO is performed in English, with the words displayed above the stage in surtitles. Originally, the opera was created to a German Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder and is still commonly performed in the German-speaking regions.

The Magic Flute contains some Masonic themes and symbolism, such as the use of the number three, the All-Seeing Eye, and ritualistic elements. However, the opera was never officially presented as a Masonic work and clearly draws from other sources too, such as folklore.

In terms of opera style, The Magic Flute is referred to as a Singspiel – a German language comic opera with singing and dialogue. Arguably one of the most popular operas of the genre, The Magic Flute features comedy and fairy-tale themes, and is overall light-hearted.
