Angel’s Bone Synopsis
Mr and Mrs X.E, are a desperate couple facing financial crisis and a crumbling marriage and they long for a better life.
They discover two bruised and battered angels in their garden, they bring them inside to nurse them back to life.
Care quickly turns to control. The couple seize the opportunity to exploit the spiritual beings in pursuit of fame and fortune.
Brutally clipping the angels’ wings to exploit this heavenly gift, the celestial beings are subjected to degrading, inhumane practices.

ENO’s performance of the UK premiere of Angel’s Bone at Aviva Studios, Manchester will be 90 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes) with no interval.
The opera Angel’s Bone was written by the Chinese American composer Du Yun and Canadian librettist Royce Vavrek.
Du Yun won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for Angel’s Bone in 2017 and she was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2018.
Angel’s Bone is about two angels who are found battered and bruised by a married couple Mr. and Mrs. X.E.
The couple intend to care for the angels but instead decide to lock them in a room to exploit them to gain fame and fortune.
The opera is an allegory for modern-day slavery and human trafficking.
