American composer Missy Mazzoli‘s powerful contemporary opera Breaking the Waves is adapted from Lars von Trier’s critically acclaimed film of the same name.

Set in Scotland, within a strict religious community, a terrible accident leaves oil rig worker Jan Nyman paralysed. He is no longer able to have a sexual relationship with his wife Bess McNeil. Jan asks her to have sex with other men and describe her experiences to him. Bess, a deeply devout woman, and believing it’s God’s will, reluctantly has a series of increasingly dangerous encounters with strangers. The opera explores faith, heartbreak and loss with unflinching emotional intensity.

Composer Missy Mazzoli is hailed as ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’ (Time Out). Her music is influenced both by Benjamin Britten and the minimalist music of Philip Glass in its use of hypnotic rhythmic pattern. Librettist Royce Vavrek brings an intimate, human voice to the work.
