Pineapple Poll
Mackerras also had a soft spot for the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan. In 1951 he composed a ballet, Pineapple Poll, for the choreographer John Cranko and the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet, which later became the Royal Ballet, where he cleverly stitched together themes taken from their works.
An Eminent Musician
To celebrate the centenary, Martin Fitzpatrick, ENO’s long-standing Head of Music penned a tribute to Sir Charles entitled The Eminent Musician, a musical celebration of Charles Mackerras. Music by Arthur Sullivan, words & arrangement by Martin Fitzpatrick with the Orchestra of ENO conducted by Matthew Kofi Waldren.
"The Mackerras Fellowship is a vital part of ENO’s commitment to talent development and to the future of opera as a vibrant and daring artform.
