Written by Gilbert & Sullivan and first premiered in 1875, this hilarious one-act opera offers a comedic exploration on taking your ex to court for breaking off the engagement!

Overview

Set in a Court of Justice, as the show opens we find Angelina attempting to sue her former fiancé, Edwin, for leaving her for another woman. Over the next 45 minutes we watch as the court proceeds with a ‘trial by jury’ to decide how the situation should be resolved.

Join us between the 14-16 January 2026 to see the phenomenal Old Bailey Choir supported by the incredible ENO Harewood Artists, stunning Orchestra of ENO in a concert performance of this iconic piece in the Grand Hall of The Old Bailey.

Entry information

Doors will open at 6pm when there will be a bar open serving wine, beer and soft drinks.  We recommend that you arrive 30 minutes before the performance to avoid queues at security.  Please bring photo identification with you.

Security

All ticket holders must present photographic ID, and pass through airport-style security.

In addition, The Old Bailey requires that the names of all ticket holders be provided at least 48 hours in advance of attending the performance. If you have purchased tickets, please complete this secure Microsoft Form informing us of the names of all attending ticket holders: Guest Information for Trial By Jury at The Old Bailey – Fill in form.  You must include the full first and last names of every guest attending.

This data will be held securely by the English National Opera, and shared only with The Old Bailey, solely for the purposes of security. Timings

The performance begins at 7pm.  Please be seated at least 10 minutes before the performance starts.

For those who have purchased tickets at £200, the reception will be from 6.30pm on the ground floor.

The bar will be open after the performance and until 9pm.

Pricing

Tickets are £50 for rear stalls, £100 for general admission, or £200 for an exclusive VIP experience with front stalls tickets and a special canapé reception.

Profits from the evening will be split between the ENO, supporting our mission to bring opera to everyone, and the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund (221927), supporting the rehabilitation of prison leavers and their families through individual grants and prison-based rehabilitation projects.
